Though the decor is (a bit overdone) Mexican, the crowd ranges from the hipster to neighborhood local seeking late night fare and the mood is casual and relaxed for conversation. Start with Rajas Con Queso (roasted green chilies with onions, tomatoes, and cheese), and then move onto dishes like Steak Fajitas, Carnitas Norteñas (boiled pork with rice and beans on 2 corn tortillas, and a side of guacamole), or Salmon Reposado, which is marinated in Tequila and served with black beans, queso and Jalapeño salsa. Top 10 White Wines Under $10

10. Veramonte Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Chile ($9)
Grown in Chile’s Casablanca Valley—the premier south of the equator location to grow Sauvignon Blanc—this wine is vibrant and refreshing with floral and citrus characteristics. The rich fruit flavors are complemented by a lively acidity.

9. Huber Gruner Veltliner Hugo 2006, Austria ($10)
This Down Under offering is apple-y and fresh with citrus and a touch of the exotic. It has a pale straw color and a distinctly earthy character. The flavor is consistent with the nose, with the crisp citrus coming through nicely. Tart and bone dry.

8. Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc 2007, California ($9)
Crisp, make that, very crisp. A tropical-style Sauvignon Blanc that has the breezy flavors of pear, melon, lime and sweet pea. No oak flavor, just a clean, tart wine with a refreshing finish.

7. Banrock Station Riesling 2006, Australia ($6.50)
This is the wine you bring to the neighborhood barbecue. A hint of sweetness and minerals to go along with its tropical notes and a bit of acidity. And for the asking price, it is well worth stocking up on for any summer occasion.

6. Danzante Pinot Grigio 2006, Italy ($10)
This wine is a light straw yellow with lovely notes of apple and pear and a crisp floral bouquet. It’s fresh and lively but also has a full-bodied quality rare in the price range.

5. Eola Hills Chardonnay 2006, Oregon ($10)
A remarkable price/value ratio on this Oregon Chardonnay: Wine & Spirits magazine calls it “simple and fresh,” and praises the “lightly-oaked Chardonnay” with “plenty of ripe apple flavor and sufficient acidity.” For those who prefer a little more body and complexity than found in the average Sauvignon Blanc.

4. Luis Felipe Edwards Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2007, Chile ($9)
Don’t let the screw top fool you. Wine guru Gary Vaynerchuk included it in his book, 101 Wines. Made in Chile’s Central Valley, this wine is crisp and bold with hints of lemon and minerals.

3. Quinta da Aveleda Vinho Verde 2006, Portugal ($8)
The editors at Wine & Spirits magazine thought enough of this bright, crisp white with a hint of spritz to rate above several far pricier wines at a recent tasting. MainStreet agrees: The perfect companion to those long, languorous summer days.

2. Santa Barbara Crossing Chardonnay 2005, California ($10)
Another top-rated pick by Wine & Spirits, this wine is a different experience altogether. It is rich, and well-ripened, with aromas of apple, pear and peach. (It’s refreshing and complex making it one of those whites you can drink year-round.)

1. La Vieille Ferme Cotes du Luberon 2007, France ($9)
A lovely Rhone Valley choice, this label blends four white-wine grapes. The result is a flavorful and crisp wine with citrus and peach accents balanced by a nice mineral undertone. Enjoy!

Top 10 Beers

1. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
In no particular order, I begin with Pale Ale. Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale is a great example of the American interpretation of this classic English brew. It is amber colored and has a nice balanced flavor. It is hopped with distinctive Cascade hops.

2. Fuller's ESB - Bitter
Fuller’s ESB is my selection for the huge family of bitters. The name might stand for Extra Special Bitter though no one really agrees on what ESB means. This beer is dark with rich malt flavoring. Light hops and low alcohol makes this a good session beer.

3. Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter - Porter
Samuel Smith’s Taddy Porter might be as close to the original porter that you can get in the beer world. Taddy has a rich dark color and a medium body.

4. Pilsner Urquell - Bohemian Pilsner
Bohemian Pilsner can only really be represented by the one beer – Pilsner Urquel, the original. Despite changes in brewing and lagering methods over the years, this is more or less the same beer that came out of the Plzen casks on October 5, 1842 and harkened a new era in brewing.

5. Guiness - Dry Stout
Guinness is my choice for dry stout. This famous beer is perhaps one of the best known beers in the world. With a small dose of beer soured by lactic acid bacteria in each batch, Guinness might not be the prototypical dry stout but it is so ubiquitous it is hard to deny it a spot on my list. Other perhaps more correct choices for this style would be Murphy’s or Beamish Stout.

6. German Pils
With pronounced hops and a lighter malt profile than even Bohemian Pilsner, German pils will be the most familiar beer on this list to those that normally drink megabrewery beers like Coors or Bud.

7. Paulaner Hefe-Weizen
Hefe-Weizen - the best representation of this style, Paulaner, is easily found almost anywhere. Chill a bottle and pour it in a glass making sure to get all of that yeast out of the bottom of the bottle. Many fans of this style like to squeeze a lemon into their glass. That’s fine but save that for the second one. For the first, just enjoy this hallmark of Bavarian brewmasters’ craft all on its own.

8. Thunderhead IPA - India Pale Ale
India Pale Ale is a brew whose history is as interesting as the beer itself. Recently it has become a favorite of that odd breed - the American hop-head. Brewed by Pyramid, Thunderhead is an excellent version of the American interpretation of this style.

9. Hoegaarden - Belguim White

Denver's Best Brewpubs

A. Southern Sun
Old-school Boulder: Tie-dye banners, jam-band music, a happy=scruffy crowd, and some of the best beer along the Front Range. Try the "Kind Beer."

Open until 1 a.m.

B. Boulder Beer Company
You'll want to visit this, the first brewpub in the state. It will be host outside - try the Sweaty Betty Blonde, a wheat beer.

Open until 9 p.m.

C. Wynkoop Brewing Company
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper doesn't own it anymore, but this is where it all started. The 'hood was rundown when Hick opened this pub, in 1988. Now it's booming. If they have it, try the Patty's Chile Beer.

Open until 2 a.m.

D. Breckenridge Blake Street Pub
Liky Wynkoop, this pub is near Coors Field (yes, our ballpark is named after a brewery). But some of the beer made here is also available in six-packs around the state, and these folks take their beer seriously. Try one of their "small batch" series.

Open until 2 a.m.

E. Falling Rock Tap House
Want beer selection? You sure? Head to this LoDo place and you might find yourself a bit overwhelmed. You could go with a Corona, but please. Just don't

Open until 2 a.m.

F. Pint's Pub
You will visit the Denver Art Museum (you had better), and when you're finished, have a home-brewed beer and some fish 'n' chips.

Open until 2 a.m.

G. Oskar Blues Cajun Grill and Brewery
When you head to Rocky Mountain National Park (like the art museum, you'd better), you'll pass through Lyons. Stop here for some excellent microbrews, and take home a six-pack of the good stuff - in cans.

Denver's Best Irish Pubs For St. Patty's Day!

Nallen's Irish Pub

Neighborhood: Larimer Square

1429 Market St.
Denver, CO 80202

303-572-0667

Looking for love in all the wrong places? And by wrong places we mean the Internet and high schools. Try Nallen’s – they boast loads of happy marriages that began when the couple met in their bar. What’s their secret? The Irish and English beers on tap? The large Scotch selection? Who knows, but alcohol seemed to work for half of Hollywood. Just don’t come here for frou-frou drinks; it’s not the place to order a strawbana mojito.

Fado Irish Pub

Neighborhood: Lodo

1735 19th St.
Denver, CO 80202

303-297-0066

The craic flows freely at Fado Irish Pub, along with the drafts and whiskey, especially during the reasonably priced weekday happy hours. You may find a new team to support as rugby and soccer fans gather regularly to cheer on their clubs, sometimes as early as 5:30 a.m. depending on the game. The cobblestone floors and panoramas of idyllic Irish scenes give the place a genuine Eire atmosphere. With traditional Irish pub grub, a roaring fire, live music and dancing, Fado is an animated spot to grab the perfect pour of Guinness.

The Irish Hound

575 Saint Paul St.
Denver, CO 80206

303-996-0709

Another of Denver’s midscale Irish public houses, the 'Hound' sets itself apart with the quality of its design. Dark wood offset by brass accoutrements surrounds a gigantic bar with comfortable wooden chairs on loan from County Cork. As befits an Irish pub, they offer an excellent array of whiskeys, and they pour them correctly—in tumblers, not shot glasses. As for food, all is above par, especially the burgers, which are thick and juicy. The wait staff rocks; very friendly and quick with their attention.

Irish Snug

Neighborhood: 17th Avenue / Up Town

1201 E. Colfax Ave.
Denver, CO 80218

303-839-1394
The Irish Snug is a Denver authentic Irish Pub, located on Capitol Hill. Rumor has it that Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady hung out here, and when you visit on the weekends you will definitely feel that vibe. This little snug is stacked with great people, food and real Irish energy.
